Blackout started in 2016 as a group of friends picking bourbon barrels. In 2018 they claimed their first racehorse and Blackout Racing Stable was born.

Today the group runs two things together: a Churchill Downs racing stable trained by Mike Tomlinson, and Blackout Barrel Company, which bottles its own single-barrel and small-batch bourbon and rye for members, with limited retail and private barrel selections available. Horse ownership opens when shares are available.

The same people who drink the whiskey own pieces of the horses. To date the stable has 32 wins and over $1 million in earnings.
